Stamford offers major metropolitan diversions without the hassle and with all the fun. Shopaholics will want to start or end the tour with the Stamford Town Center Mall [1]. Just outside the Saks entrance, from the leafy expanse of Veterans Park [2], you can view the Palace Theatre [4] across the street before turning south towards Rich Forum [3]. Aficionados of live theatre, opera, symphony and ballet will find top quality performances presented through both regularly.
Stamford’s appreciation of culture is evident throughout the year in its use of downtown parks for special events. Columbus Park[5] stages the heavily attended Alive At Five concert series and Latham Park [9], is home of the seasonal French Market, made even more popular by the tasty trend to find locally grown produce. During the annual Sculpture Tour downtown streets and businesses proudly exhibit works selected according to a designated theme or by a special artist. The UCONN Gallery of Art [6] exhibited multiple works during Sculpture Tour 2008.
Students of architecture: prepare to be mesmerized. Visitors stop and marvel at the unique artistry of the many different styles of architecture represented on every street. Do not miss the First Presbyterian Church [8]. Its complex and rich history is found both outside on the stone engravings and the modern bell tower and inside in a spectacular stained glass nave, and magnificent pipe organ.
Film buffs must check out the Avon Theatre Film Center[7]. This non-profit cinema offers cutting-edge films and documentaries, special screenings, speakers and film centered events. Directly across the street is Restaurant Row: Irish pub, 50’s diner, Asian fusion, Italian, Japanese, Indian, Spanish, and more. Foodies are sure to be seduced by the choices here and elsewhere along the route.
More outdoor fun is just 6-7 miles north in the museum, trails and barnyard of the Stamford Museum and Nature Center or the nature preserve at Bartlett Arboretum & Gardens, both open year round. Or head 2 miles south to the ocean, experience the ecological cruises offered via the schooner SoundWaters or enjoy the white sands and coastal pleasures of Cove Island Park.
Walk at your leisure as shown on the map 2.8 miles from points 1 – 9.
